Moving Forward With a Driving Passion
Have you ever read the book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey? In the book, he mentions 7 habits that will help you to become successful, understood and to be a great leader. What is a habit? A cue that tells our brain to go on automatic whether physical, mental, or emotional. When we accomplish these habits, it will become a part of who we are and we will do them automatically when they become a habit.
They are:
1. Be Proactive. Become a self-starter, take charge.
2. Begin with the end in mind. Picture yourself where you want to be in the future.
3. Put first things first. Set out a strategy with minimum disruption. Daily chore list.
After we have mastered habits 1, 2, and 3, we achieve a Private Victory=we trust ourselves to be in control to face the world.
4. Think win win. Have an attitude of winning, but not at the expense of others.
5. Seek first to understand, and then to be understood. Empathetic listening.
6. Synergize 1+1=3 When everyone on the team wants everyone to win.
When we have mastered habits 4, 5, and 6, we achieve a Public Victory=we are able to meet the world with the intent to help and can be trusted.
7. Sharpen the saw. Regroup, study, rest.
Which of these habits have the most meaning to me? I would have to say sharpening my saw is my highest priority. I am a planner, so resting, regrouping, thinking, planning, and praying helps me to put all the other habits into motion.
The seven habits will help me fill my life with passion and purpose by helping me master my self before I can master the world. When I know who I am and my purpose, I then will have the confidence in myself and my purpose to do what I was sent to Earth to do.
In Gordon B. Hinckley's talk titled, Stand True and Faithful, he says that we need to be true to ourselves and the best we have within us. When we are true to ourselves, our self-respect increases. Be good to others and not participate in gossip. Lift each other up, encourage, and strengthen. We need good friends to help us in good times and in bad. The way of happiness is in keeping the commandments of God. When we fall short of the glory of God, we need to repent and continue on His path back home. How we speak, our language, to others should be uplifting. No profanity or sleazy talk. We need to be true to our Heavenly Father and our Savior by not taking the Lord's name in vain. We need to remember who we are and to be true to that knowledge. We need help in our lives and prayer is the vehicle to reach our Father in Heaven. He is always there to help and guide us.
In Guy Kawaski's video, he explains that passion is so much more important than money. If our goal is to just earn a lot of money, our lives will be hollow without meaning. Our priorities need to be made and goals set toward things that will bring much happiness and purpose in our own lives, but also in the lives of those around us.
How can I move forward with a driving passion? I need to remember who I am. That I am a daughter of Heavenly Father who loves me and wants me to serve his children well. He wants me to find and develop the gifts He has so freely given. There is a purpose to my birth and existence at this time. There is an important work for me to fulfill. When I put into action the 7 habits, pray, read my patriarchal blessing, and keep the commandments, and repent when needed, I will be able to accomplish all the goals I set out to achieve.
